Special Monthly Compensation at the S level (SMC-S) provides higher VA disability payments to veterans with severe service-connected conditions that limit independence.
Often called “housebound” benefits, SMC-S ensures compensation reflects the real-life impact of significant disabilities.

What Is SMC-S?
SMC-S is an enhanced VA disability benefit for veterans whose conditions:
-
Confine them mostly to their home, or
-
Meet strict combined rating criteria for severe disability.
It replaces standard VA disability pay with a higher monthly amount to help cover daily costs, in-home care, and mobility needs.
Who Qualifies for SMC-S?
There are two main ways to qualify:
Veterans may qualify if a service-connected condition makes leaving home extremely difficult.
-
Not total confinement, but mostly homebound except for medical visits or emergencies
-
Severe mobility issues, reliance on a wheelchair, or need for constant assistance often meet this standard
Even if veterans are not homebound, they may qualify if:
-
One service-connected condition is rated 100% (or approved for TDIU), and
-
A second, unrelated condition is rated 60% or higher
Example: A veteran with 100% PTSD and a separate 60% heart condition may qualify, even if able to leave home independently.
The VA evaluates how service-connected conditions limit daily functioning and independence—not just the number of disabilities.
How SMC-S Impacts Monthly VA Pay
In 2026, SMC-S pays $4,408.53 per month for a veteran without dependents. Additional amounts are available for:
-
Spouses
-
Dependent children
-
Dependent parents
This higher payment helps cover costs linked to severe disabilities, such as in-home care, transportation, and adaptive equipment.
SMC-S recognizes that some conditions impose limitations far beyond standard VA ratings, providing financial support that matches the level of need.
